Know before you drive out.

Pinot Oregon is an independent guide to more than 400 Willamette Valley tasting rooms: hours, tasting fees, walk-in policies, and who is open today. I designed, built, and run it.

Why I built it

Planning a day of wine tasting means opening a dozen winery websites to find out who is open, who takes walk-ins, and what a tasting costs. Pinot Oregon answers those questions in one place, for every tasting room in the valley, and tells you honestly what it has not confirmed.

Architecture

The site is fully static. Astro builds about 835 pages ahead of time, one for every winery, town, growing area, grape, and filter, with no server and no database behind them. Each tasting room is one typed record in a data file. Search, filters, and "open today" all run in the visitor's browser, and visited pages keep working offline. The only server code is one small function that handles the correction form. Everything is hosted on Cloudflare Pages.

Decisions worth explaining

Unknown is never "no"

Every yes-or-no fact about a tasting room, such as whether dogs are welcome, can be yes, no, or not yet known. An unknown never counts as a no. Filters only count confirmed facts, and every filtered list says plainly that other rooms may qualify but are not confirmed yet.

Every fact has a source

An automated pipeline reads each winery's own website and proposes facts, each with a word-for-word quote and the page it came from. A script confirms the quote really appears on that page, and a second independent check judges the fact against its quote. Anything doubtful comes to me. Each listing shows where its facts came from.

Open today, calculated when you look

Whether a room is open is worked out in your browser at the moment you look, from its regular hours, seasonal dates, and appointment-only days. A day with no stated hours shows as not listed, never as closed, and by appointment never counts as open.

Private by design

Your saved list lives on your own device. Your location is requested only when you ask for rooms near you, and it is never stored or sent anywhere.

Built for the next region

Nothing in the code is specific to Oregon. A new region needs a configuration file and a data file, not new code.

Running it

Before any change reaches the live site, the full test suite runs: the data and fee rules, search, the correction form, and a browser test that drives real pages at phone and desktop widths, including offline. Every push deploys automatically, and other branches get their own preview addresses. Hand corrections sit in a separate layer on top of the data, so re-running the pipeline never loses them. If a release goes wrong, a single setting rolls every visitor back.

Where it stands

Pinot Oregon is live with more than 400 tasting rooms. Wineries can submit updates through a confirmation link, and regular re-checks of every listing are next.
